You may hear the term Racing Royalty thrown around a lot during the Spring Racing Carnival. As is often the case with superlatives, it is an overstatement. For David Hayes, however, it is right on the mark. The Hayes name is one of the most famous in Australian racing. The family racehorse training and breeding dynasty was established by Davids father, Colin, in 1947. From the mid-1960s, their heritage-listed base in the picturesque Barossa Valley in South Australia pumped out more than 5000 winners -- including two successes in the Melbourne Cup, three in the Cox Plate and the Victoria Derby, and one Caulfield Cup.There were 40 trainers premierships in there, too. He was one of the three trainers at the forefront of the sport, dominating it along with Bart Cummings and Tommy Smith. When Colin retired in 1990, it was time for son David to take over. In the 26 years that have followed, David has posted more than 3000 winners himself and been premier trainer of Victoria 18 times. This Saturday, David will saddle up the unusually named He Or She in an extraordinary edition of the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes over 2000 metres. Dont be led into thinking that with the horse having been gelded that it has resulted created a case of gender identity confusion. He Or She is a six-year-old male. The name originated from the Western Australian-based owner deciding to have some fun with the naming. It is not only a standout renewal of the 130-year-old race because of the Melbourne re-appearance of the blockbuster drawcard, Winx, but because her presence means the race will have a field of only three runners. No way, 53-year-old Hayes said of his expectation that the race would attract such a small field. In the end I saw a three-horse, Aus$50,000 gallop (for third prize).I had always intended to run him in the Cranbourne Cup (on Sunday) but having been placed in those two Group 1 races, sometimes I have seen upset results in those races with small fields by horses with He Or Shes ability.Winx is a short-priced favourite at $1.18 with UBET, Black Heart Bart is $4.60, and He Or She is the rank outsider at $26, but Hayes isnt willing to concede that easily.Ive got a funny feeling that he could split them. You never know. One of them might have an off day. Black Heart Bart is a query over 2000 (metres), and Winx might be like Kingston Town and hate Caulfield. Shes never been there, Hayes told ESPN with reference to the three-time Cox Plate-winning legend who famously failed at his few visits to Caulfield, the first in the Caulfield Guineas of 1979.How do you know? Shes (Winx) never been there. Our one has won there, and run a last-start second there at Group 1 level.Previously handled in Western Australia, David took over the six-year-olds training in 2015. Placed in both the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) four weeks ago and the Underwood Stakes (2000m) a fortnight later at Caulfield, He Or She has been finishing off strongly to the line especially as the distances have increased. Each time he has raced against Black Heart Bart, he has finished a bit closer to him each time. Black Heart Bart has had his meaure, but maybe under match race conditions, he may not, Hayes told ESPN.While the race will be mostly billed as a clash between Winx and Black Heart Bart, David is somewhat familiar with what is effectively a match race. In 1992 his Cox Plate winner Better Loosen Cup took on 1991 Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner Lets Elope, trained by Bart Cummings, in a specially staged race at Caulfield during its Carnival week. It was a $75,000 winner-take-all contest with Lets Elope the victor. It was a wet year and both horses couldnt get runs because of the wet tracks They drew 20,000 people to Caulfield on the Wednesday meeting to see them, Hayes recalled.Better Loosen Up was a swooper but he was forced to lead. But I know He Or She, hell just be following and hopefully he joins the party at the 200 (metres mark. While David steered the Hayes training ship on his own for most of his career, training partnerships have successfully come into vogue over the past decade. The name D A Hayes no longer appears in the racebook, instead replaced with a family trio: D Hayes, (son) Ben Hayes and (nephew) Tom Dabernig. Angaston in South Australia is also home no longer. They have built a newer, slicker and central operation in Euroa, two hours north of Melbourne.Where the Lindsay Park property once employed 140 people, the Euroa base now has 70 employees. Racing is racing, but it is still very much a business.Dad and I were an unofficial partnership 30 years ago but dad just wasnt well enough to do it. I really wish they were because we used to work like a partnership; he was the chairman and I was the trainer. We race nine times a week nowadays, not even just seven days, with night racing plus dual states. We can spread the workload amongst the partners; its really good, and weve always got someone somewhere and the business is a lot healthier now. I find that when youve got a couple of hard-working young people, theyre terrific. Theyre good in any sports team, arent they? That analogy proves very timely with Davids son Will -- one of twins -- having played in Footscrays recent VFL Grand Final victory.Of the team that Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig are taking to Caulfield on Saturday, the partnership has Harlow Gold in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas over 1600 metres on a pathway to the Crown Oaks (2500m) on 3 November.Shes got barrier one so shell get the soft run but shell just need luck from the 400 (metres mark) when it matters, Hayes told ESPN of the filly who is rated an $11 chance with UBET. Shes very strong, shes raced inside horses and shes won at the track and distance. So shes ticked a few boxes and really over the odds.Colin Hayes once coined this phrase, which has became synonymous with the family training power base in South Australia: The future belongs to those who plan for it. And is exactly how David has had to approach not only the survival of what is now a never-ending, seven days a week business, but to grow with an expanding racing industry.A part of that growth saw David move to the Hong Kong in 1996. He had been the premier trainer in Melbourne and Adelaide in the preceding five seasons. The change wasnt about the charm of Oriental racing and furious punting; business prosperity was at the forefront.Hong Kong has the strongest racing economy in the world, he told ESPN.The tax situation is much better so you can generally make ground a lot easier than in Australia.Hayes averaged around 50 winners a season in a successful 10 years in the Asian racing hub, and the earnings allowed him to buy his siblings shares of the Lindsay Park estate.Training away from Lindsay Park was exciting, as is the racing. Some of the genuine highlights of my training career were in Hong Kong. I loved it, said Hayes who will be reaching for his 83rd Group 1 success on Saturday. While racing is a sport built on the punt, the Hayes name may never have seen the bright lights of the big time had it not been for one very significant gamble.Dad put all of their honeymoon savings on a horse that he was riding in Adelaide. Luckily it ran third at 60-1, he collected and it saved the marriage and the honeymoon. It probably saved him a decent bollocking, too.Though the racing game might be increasing on the hectic scale as time marches forward, David Hayes wont be straying far from it any time soon. These two, my nephew and my son, are lucky. Im still pretty fit and young. Theyre getting a lot of hours in the day from me. But I own the place. Its nice. Charles Mann Youth Jersey .
