ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Desmond Jennings redeemed himself for an early defensive miscue with a game-winning hit in the 12th inning. Jennings RBI single gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers and the Rays took over the top spot in the AL wild-card race. "You know what? I want to believe this game has to give us some kind of impetus moving forward," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Texas has a half-game lead over Cleveland, which lost at Kansas City, for the second wild card. The Rangers, who snapped a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday, are 3-13 in September. Jose Lobaton opened the 12th with a single off Joseph Ortiz (2-2) and pinch-runner Sam Fuld went to second on Yunel Escobars bunt. Fuld then scored on Jennings hit to right centre. Leonys Martin put Texas up 2-0 with a two-run triple off Chris Archer in the second. Jennings misread the drive in centre, first moving in and then couldnt get back in time as the ball went over his head. "My confidence is good," Jennings said. "I just made a bad read on a ball. Its good to win a game. It definitely felt really good." Brandon Gomes (2-1) struck out Ian Kinsler with runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the 12th for the Rays, who have won two of the first three games of the four-game series. "You talk about the total team victory right there, how about it?" Maddon said. "All kinds of crazy little nuances in the game. Thats why the game is so beautiful. Its even more beautiful when you win a game like that." Texas took a 3-2 lead in the 11th when Elvis Andrus scored from first base on Adrian Beltres two-out single. The Rays tied on David DeJesus RBI single in the bottom of the inning as Matt Joyce drew a two-out walk from Rangers closer Joe Nathan. Pinch-runner Freddy Guzman stole second and scored on DeJesus hit. "Against a tough team, were battling for that spot right now," DeJesus said. "To get a hit when we needed it, it was a relief and changed the momentum in the game." It was Nathans third blown save in 42 chances this season. "This is tough because we were right where we wanted to be with the right person on the mound," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Joes been solid for us all year. It just didnt happen tonight." Another tough September outing for the Rangers. "If it was the last game and we werent in it because of it, that would be the toughest loss," Nathan said. "But were still in the post-season arent we? I cant see how this can be the toughest loss. We get another opportunity tomorrow." Sean Rodriguez, who had just two hits in his previous 16 at-bats against Rangers starter Derek Holland, tied it at 2-all in the sixth with a two-run homer off the left-hander. Rodriguez made a diving catch in shallow left with one out in the ninth to take a hit away from A.J. Pierzynski. Archer gave up two runs and four hits over six innings. Holland, who went 0-3 with a 10.13 ERA in his previous three starts, allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. NOTES: Tampa Bay LHP Matt Moore (15-3) will go against Texas RHP Yu Darvish (12-9) in Thursday nights series finale. "This is the most fun time of the year for us," Moore said. ... Rays reliever Jesse Crain (strained right shoulder) is scheduled to pitch in an instructional league game on Thursday. ... Lance Berkman (hip and knee), 0 for 12 in five games since being reinstated from the DL on Sept. 1, still cant swing right-handed but remains in the Rangers left-handed DH mix. "I know he hasnt done a heck of a lot, but hes one of those guys who can wake up on a cold day with snow out there and get a base hit," Washington said. Speaking to TSN 1200 on Friday evening, Bryan Murray said he has not made any final decisions on his team for next season – and that includes giving a formal vote of confidence to head coach Paul MacLean. When asked directly about MacLeans job security moving forward, Murray did not make any guarantees for his head coach or any of his players. “I dont have a definite answer to that, but Pauls got a contract going forward. He was Coach of the Year last year and I dont know what happened this year necessarily as far as performance is concerned,” Murray said. “I think hes a very good coach and I think he has the ear of the players in the room. We had some really tough outings and its shared amongst a lot of people – myself included. We thought this team was better. We thought we had enough skill here to offset a couple of little things we were missing last year – and it didnt work out. Was that because of the departure of Daniel Alfredsson? Was it because we overestimated a couple our young guys? I think all of those evaluations will take place and will continue. With 10 games to go, well be watching very closely with the effort that is put forward here. Im certainly not planning to make any decisions until the 82 games have gone by and well make a decision based on the whole year.” Murray also elaborated on the prognosis of Bobby Ryan, who underwent surgery on Thursday in Montreal to repair a sports hernia injury that had been plaguing him for most of the season. Murray indicated that Ryan should be able to resume his off-ice training in a few weeks and his summer program should not be affected. Ryan – who had a team-leading 23 goals at the time of his injury – had a disappointing first season as the Senators failed to make the playoffs and he did not reach the 30-goal plateau. However, Murray was quick to point out that his injury played a major role in his lower prooductivity and the front office remains committed to him long-term.ddddddddddddRyans contract expires at the end of next season and while the Senators are not allowed to start formal negotiations on an extension until July 1st, Murray was adamant the club would push hard to keep him in Ottawa. “I think hes going to be happy to talk to us. We certainly plan to try to keep him, we hope to get something done with Bobby so he will have a long career in Ottawa,” said Murray. While Murray cannot open his contract talks with players like Ryan and Jason Spezza until July 1st, he can start negotiating with a pending free agent for his summer in Ales Hemsky. Acquired by the Senators at the trade deadline, the 30-year-old has been a nice addition to the Sens lineup and has found chemistry with Spezza on a consistent basis. Murray has not opened formal negotiations with Hemskys camp, but says that will be coming soon. “Ive said hello to his agent and Ive talked to Ales a little bit and I get the impression he likes it here, he likes the city and he likes the way hes been treated. Until you start talking and realize what the commitment is – term and dollar wise – its hard to know. Certainly well have conversations and thats part of the reason why we traded for him at the deadline. We thought if we could get him on board here and he gets to know the group and how we operate, it might be easier for us to negotiate with him and can be an advantage for us.” Murray also said he yet to open up negotiations with netminder Robin Lehner, who is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. While he has had a down year with only eight wins in 32 games and a 3.23 GAA, Lehner figures to be a major piece for the organization moving forward. And the general manager does not anticipate an issue re-signing the 22-year-old coming
